J. TAYLOR HARDEN, PHD, RN, FGSA, FAAN




































        In her career service, Dr. J. Taylor Harden has been a military nurse, distinguished nurse educator, research
        administrator, businesswomen, and executive. She is a Gerontologist, Visiting Professor at the University of
        Texas at Austin School of Nursing, and the Executive Director Emeritus of the National Hartford Center of
        Gerontological Nursing Excellence. This center is a non-profit professional association composed of member
        schools of nursing and institutions, internationally, that have demonstrated the highest level of commitment
        to the fields of geriatrics and gerontological nursing. Previously, Dr. Harden served as the Assistant to the
        Director of the National Institute on Aging in the Office of Special Populations where she was responsible for
        activities supporting women, racially and ethnically diverse populations, and people with disabilities. She also
        served as Acting Deputy Director of the National Institute on Aging, National Institutes of Health, 2008.

        Dr. Harden has received many honors such as the Anthony J. Jannetti Award for Extraordinary Contributions to
        Health Care presented by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses; the New York University College of Nursing
        Helen Manzer Award; the Gerontological Society of America’s Outstanding Mentorship Award, and the
        three-time recipient of the National Institutes of Health Director’s Award first for her work on the National
        Institute on Aging Health Disparities Strategic Plan, second for her work on the trans-National Institutes of
        Health health disparities planning committee, and third for her outstanding mentorship of new and early
        career scientists.  She is a member of the National Advisory Council, Betty Irene Moore Nurse Fellowship in
        Leadership and Innovation, at the University of California, Davis, and member of Sigma Theta Tau
        International Honor Society of Nursing. She is also a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America and
        American Academy of Nursing. She has mentored more than 100 trainees, and many of them have gone on to
        become successful independently funded clinical scientists.

        Dr. Harden received both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from the University of Maryland at
        Baltimore and is a distinguished alumna of its School of Nursing. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in
        Psychiatric Mental-Health Nursing (Psycho-gerontology) from the University of Texas at Austin and is a
        distinguished alumna of its School of Nursing.
